Colleges of education in Nigeria were especially established to train professional teachers in secondary schools. When teacher’s Grade II training colleges were phased out as a result of National Policy on Education, colleges of Education’s responsibilities were expanded to train professional teachers in both primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.

Nigeria Colleges of Education Games Association (NICEGA) first started as Nigerian Advanced Teacher Colleges of Education Games Association (NATCEGA) with objectives of:

  1. Bringing together all teacher in training in sporting avenue for physical, mental and emotional development as well as social interaction among staff and students;
  2. Improving sports as well as other essential facilities in the various institutions hosting the games.
  3. Improving the image of the hosting institution as well as the state to which they belong.
  4. Revising sports and other social infrastructures for the good health of students and staff as well as enhance effective teaching and learning in the colleges.
  5. Affording opportunity for the cross-cultural interaction and therefore, promoting national unity. The objectives are still intact in spite of the change in nomenclature.

The association was formed in 1977 and the first National Chairman was Dr. Eze Achiugo (Late) of Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri. Other chairmen to date include: Dr. D.O Ogunbiyi, Dr. Amos Adamu (Former Director General of National Sports Commission), Dr. Mrs Dimka (Late), Dr. Bob Uzoalor, and now Dr. Sanusi Mohamed. The first NATCEGA (then) was hosted by Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri in 1978. The second game festival was held at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo in 1980. The third edition was held in 1982 at College of Education, Sokoto now Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto. While the 4th game festival was held in 1984 at Benue State College of Education, Katsina-Ala. The 5th edition was held at Adeniran Ogunsnys College of Education, Oto-Ijanikin Lagos IN 1986. Former Oyo State College of Education, now Osun State College of Education, Ilesa hosted the 1988 games, i.e. the 6th edition (Obokun ‘88) when the name of the association was changed from Nigerian Advanced Teacher Colleges of Education Games Association (NATCEGA) to Nigeria Colleges of Education Games Association (NICEGA).

The 1990 NICEGA was held in Jigawa State College of Education, Gumel as the 7th edition (LAUTAI ‘90) while College of Education, Kastina hosted the 8th edition of the games in 1992. RIVCOE’94 games was held at Rivers State College of Education, Port Harcourt in 1994 as the 9th edition while Federal College of Education, Kano was the venue for the 10th NICEGA games in 1996. In 1998, Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri hosted the 11th edition of the NICEGA while Federal College of Education, Osiele-Abeokuta, was the venue for the 12th edition in the year 2000. The 13th edition was supposed to be held at Federal College of Education, Zaria but inadvertently aborted.      

The 14th edition of NICEGA tagged” ILESA 2005” was hosted by Osun State College of Education, Ilesa. The 15th edition of the games was held at Federal College of Education, Obudu in 2007. The 16th edition which was tagged “MAGAJIN DABO 2009” games was hosted by Federal College of Education, Kano. The 17th edition of NICEGA games tagged” AKALAKA 2011” was held at Federal College of Education (T) Omoku, Rivers State. The 18th Edition of NICEGA even though it was held in 2014, it was tagged “TALBA 2013” because the Games was to be hosted by Niger State College of Education, Minna in 2013. The 19th Edition of the Games is scheduled to take place at Federal College of Education, Obudu this year 2015.
